State of the market with Tim

On 5 May 2025

Electrify 2800 member Tim Brand brings extensive knowledge of the science that makes this technology works seamlessly for us. He shares some handy statistics on what we look like as a nation and where electricity is going to take us.

“We are all on the journey to making our lives 100% electric. We are all at different stages of our journey and have started from different points.”

“Over the past few years, and really as long as any of us can remember, the cost of purchasing and running appliances has changed. New technology enters the market outside the price range of many but as time passes it becomes more affordable. Government support in the form of rebates is always changing.”

Solar PV (photovoltaic panels) is now common on Australian rooftops. About one third of NSW homes generate electricity on their roof tops. The number is going up every day because it helps to reduce our bills.

SOLAR PV STATS:

  • 4 million installations across the country.
  • One million installed in NSW.
  • 300,000 rooftop systems are installed a year
  • The average rooftop system saves a household more than $1,500 a year on energy bills
  • Solar PV benefits for the broader energy system, by reducing wholesale prices and demand for more expensive sources of energy during the day

Gas cooktops use to be the appliance of choice for home cooks. They were cheap to run and offered the best cooking options, but gas is now so much more expensive, can affect asthmatics and the open flames can be unsafe, especially when less able people are using them or children are about.

Electric induction cooktops are now the gold standard, being faster, easy to control, cleaner and safer than gas, and their smooth cook top make them very easy to clean.

Cars are another great example of big changes. It wasn’t so long ago that we lived with the dirty fumes and loud noises of slow to warm up petrol and diesel vehicles. The low running costs of an Electric Vehicle soon make-up for what is usually a dearer new vehicle price but EV prices are coming down as more competition and improved production methods come on line. In addition to a great driving experience, EV require very little mechanical maintenance. Another win for the wallet.

    EV STATS:

    • Australia saw a record 114,000 new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) sold in 2024.
    • EVs accounted for about 7.4% of the total new car market in 2024.
    • Australia’s Electric Vehicle Council predicts 2.5 million EVs to be on the road by 2030 (equivalent to approximately 50-60% of all new vehicles purchased being EVs).
