Rewiring Australia’s new report ‘The Electrification Tipping Point’ showcases new modelling of the economic and emissions impacts of consumer choices about appliances, vehicles, solar and batteries.
About 20 per cent of Australia’s carbon emissions come from how we heat our homes and our water, how we cook, what vehicles we drive, and where we get our electricity from.
The report’s modelling shows households that switch to an electric car, solar, and electric appliances could save more than $4000 a year, even when including upfront costs.

This means, for example, that while an electric heat pump hot water system might cost around $4,000 compared to $1,900 for a gas hot water system, a gas system would spend up to $8,000 on fuel over 15 years, compared to $3,900 on grid electricity for the heat pump, or just $1,000 with rooftop solar.
Rewiring Australia co-founder and chief scientist Dr Saul Griffith reveals the five updates every household should consider as part of their long-term plan to get off fossil fuels, and ultimately, save money.
This doesn’t require you to rip out and replace your gas appliances with electric ones right away. Instead, Dr Griffith says to simply ‘fix it when it fails’.
Fix it when it fails.
